Description:

The employee serves as Journeyman Electrician within the Facilities Management Service/Engineering Branch at the Orlando VA Medical Center. Employee is responsible to WS-2805-10 Electrician Foreman. The Journeyman Electrician will be responsible for the day to day maintenance and operations of all electrical power systems throughout the Orlando VAMC Main Campus and off site business offices and Outpatient Clinics.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards .

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note : A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The employee must be physically fit as work involves lifting, pulling, climbing, crawling, working with hands over head, working in confined areas, and using arm and back muscles in tightening of connections. He/she must have the ability to be on feet for long periods either standing, walking, working off ladder, or staging materials, and lift equipment weighing 60 pounds and over. The employee will request assistance when needed to avoid injury.

Working Conditions: The employee will work within the medical facility's operating functions and must use all appropriate safety tools, clothing, etc., to protect him/herself, other staff, visitors, and patients. Other assignments can be in remote areas such as sub-basements, machinery rooms, rooftops, roads, and walkways. Work is performed inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather, wet, cramped locations; is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises, toxic fumes, gases, and acids. Subject to burns from steam lines, gas burning equipment, welding torches, and molten solder. Possibility of falls exists due to work in high places. Employee is subject to infections from unsanitary working areas such as sewers, waste traps, and lines. The employee will assists in other crafts within the Engineering Services. The employee must always be aware of safety hazards and know what action should be taken to avoid them. Incumbent must observe all local and National Safety Codes. Must know and comply with all the safety factors of the various trades to prevent fires and injury to patients and personnel. The employee must wear a respirator and disposable clothing including coveralls and cover for head, hands and feet when working in areas of possible asbestos contamination.
