Description:

The Health Technician (Podiatry) provides quality care to a variety of patients; the care provided will include the activities listed below of both clinical and administrative scope, but is not inclusive of all the tasks performed at this level. Supports medical and health care professionals in tests and procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions.

The Health Aid and Technician Series, 0640 has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) which must be satisfied to be further considered for the position. (e.g., experience or education).
  • Specialized Experience (for position at GS-04 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical and health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
OR,
  • Education and Training: For GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24-semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

GS-05 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
  • Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to :
    • Develops and promotes resourcefulness in helping patients and staff, exercising patience in resolving problems to enhance patient and customer satisfaction
    • Identifies and reports problems which negatively impact patient treatment and/or public relations in a timely manner through appropriate supervisory channels.
    • Use and application of advanced wound care products to include but not limited to Apligraf, Dermagraf, Oasis grafting materials, xenografts, Regranex, Enzyme debriding agents, wound care gels,negative pressure wound care VAC systems, both mechanical and electrical.
    • Performs difficult specialized tests and measurements that are precursory to the physician's treatment of the patient.
    • Orders and maintains specialized supplies pertaining to instruments used in the unit.

  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must successfully completed a full 4-year course study leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to Health Technician (Podiatry).   • Combination of Experience & Education: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (Transcript required).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note : A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The work requires a moderate amount of sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of light items. The work may require heavy lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying of equipment or patients. Patient transport occasionally requires pushing of wheelchairs. The work is performed predominately on one's feet. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. Incumbents must utilize good body mechanics in performing duties safely. Some stressful situations may occur when communicating with patients and their families who may have multiple physical, mental and psychosocial problems and needs.
