The Health Technician (Emergency Medical Technician - EMT) is assigned to Nursing at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, Florida and provides efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Handling emergencies using basic and advanced life support equipment and skills in accordance with behavioral objectives outlined in the U.S. Department of Transportation EMT-Basic curriculum.

Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
Minimum Qualification Requirement:
- Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Responds to on-station emergencies and transports critical patients on VA property. Serves as the first clinical contact for incoming patients when assigned to the Triage area. Aids in the search for medical identification, provides technical support to the Emergency Department Physicians and Nurses. Observes, records and reports general and specific physical and behavioral signs and symptoms indicated of change in a patient's condition. Assist with provision of emotional and physical comfort of patients while in transport; operates and monitors applicable medical equipment related to emergency treatment.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
